Denise Nelson

Environmental Engineer

Denise has over 20 years of experience in water, wastewater, and stormwater utilities and sustainable infrastructure in the U.S. and New Zealand. She is a leading expert on the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure's Envision rating system having served as the first third party expert to verify a project for an award and later on staff at ISI as the Vice President for Public Education. She had a leading role in developing the Envision training programs and supported 100 teams in evaluating projects in the U.S. and Canada. Prior to ISI, she built and operated hydraulic and hydrologic models, performed asset management studies, and designed pipelines, pump stations, and stormwater management facilities.

Denise is a licensed engineer in Virginia and Ohio, an Envision Sustainability Professional, and a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional. She has a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech and a Masters of Science degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. She serves on sustainability committees for ASCE, APWA Mid-Atlantic Chapter, and VWEA, and has written many articles and presentations on Envision and sustainable best practices. At home she maintains a family garden, composting, rain barrels, green roof, and other sustainable features.
