Historic Overlay District Design Guidelines

City of Manassas

In order to better preserve and maintain the community’s historic resources, the City of Manassas acquired the Berkley Group to develop updated Historic Overlay District Guidelines. In this ongoing project, the planning team brings preservation and design expertise to the community in order to organize, clarify and expand the existing guidelines for improved ease of use and adaptability with modern preservation challenges.

The planning team conducted extensive best practices research and facilitated work sessions with City staff and the Architectural Review Board to establish main challenges, opportunities and priorities. The final guidelines are the result of a careful comprehensive planning process guided by the City of Manassas staff, Architectural Review Board, and residents.

The final Historic Overlay District Design Guidelines were adopted in April 2022. Currently, the Berkley Group is building a web-based platform and informational guide to help owners of historic buildings better understand their responsibilities; Berkley Group is also translating the guidelines into the Spanish language.
