Education, Networking, and Collaboration Events in July

 

The 2019 Resilient Virginia Conference is Thursday-Friday, July 18-19 in Charlottesville.  Brought to you by the non-profit Resilient Virginia and UVA’s Environmental Resilience Institute, the theme is “Connecting Rural and Urban Communities for a Resilient Future.”  More information and registration are available at https://resilientvirginia.org/buildings/2019-resilient-virginia-conference.  We’ll be there:

  • Stop by The Berkley Group table! 

  • Darren Coffey, CEO, will present in the session on the Healthy Watersheds Forest Initiative Thursday at 10:30 am.  The session with Robbie Talbert (VDOF) and Chandler Van Voorhis (Acre Investment Management) will address value of forests, the carbon sequestration market, and pilot testing in Orange and Essex Counties. 

  • Denise Nelson, Environmental Engineer, will moderate the FEMA Community Rating System (CRS) workshop on Friday at 10:15 am.  The workshop includes Susannah Smith (Warrenton), Ken Somerset (Poquoson), Jonet Prevost-White (Richmond), Danielle DeHart (Roanoke), and Michael Vernon (The Flood Fixer).  The presentations and panel Q&A will share the approach to becoming a CRS member, the benefits, and lessons learned along the way.

The 2019 APA Virginia Chapter Annual Conference is Sunday-Wednesday, July 21-24 in Hampton.  This year’s theme is “Resilience.”  More information and registration are available at  https://www.apavirginia.com.  We’ll be there: 

  • We are getting an award!  The Berkley Group and Mecklenburg County are the 2019 Old Dominion Innovative Approaches Award winner for Solar Farm Planning & Zoning.  Denise Nelson, Environmental Engineer, will share details of the project during the Award Session on Tuesday, July 23, 9:15-10:15am.  Robert Hendrick, Mecklenburg County Zoning Administrator, Todd Gordon, Director of Planning, and Denise Nelson will be accepting the award at the Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, July 23, 11:45-12:45pm. 

  • Denise Nelson, Environmental Engineer, will co-present with Scott Smith, City of Norfolk Coastal Resiliency Manager, on the “Resilient Norfolk:  Ohio Creek Watershed Envision® Case Study” on Tuesday at 10:30 am.  The presentation will describe the planning and design of the coastal resilience improvements in the Ohio Creek Watershed Project and the use of the Envision rating system to evaluate and document best practices.

 

The 2019 VAPDC Summer Conference is Wednesday-Friday, July 24-26 in Colonial Williamsburg.  This year’s theme is “50 Years of Regional Collaboration.”  More information and registration are available at  https://www.vapdc.org/vapdc-sc19?id=26732753.  We’ll be there: 

  • Denise Nelson, Environmental Engineer, will join Ann Jennings, Deputy Secretary of Natural Resources, and Martha Moore, Virginia Farm Bureau, for a panel on Thursday at 9:00 am.  The presentation and panel Q&A will discuss the local and state efforts in developing and implementing the Chesapeake Bay TMDL Phase III Watershed Implementation Plan.  Denise will share the approach and lessons learned related to non-agricultural land and non-regulated localities in the George Washington Regional Commission, the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission, and the Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission.
