Strategic Plan 2023-2028

West Point Public Schools, VA

Berkley Group worked with West Point Public Schools (WPPS) to revise its recently updated Comprehensive Strategic Plan. The school division has over 125 employees, making it the second-largest employer in town, second only to the WestRock Paper Mill. Based on the most recent state accreditation ratings (2023), WPPS is fully accredited by the Commonwealth of Virginia according to the Standards of Accreditation. WPPS serves over 800 students within two building locations. West Point Elementary educates 359 students in grades PreK-5, while West Point Middle/High School educates 452 students in grades 6-12.

Through this project, Berkley Group helped West Point to restructure, align, and focus their strategic plan to actually guide their continuous improvement efforts over the next five years. Berkley Group worked with division and board leadership to further develop, refine, and in some cases, reimagine the processes that ensure that the strategic plan is the work. Based on the work completed on this project, our partnership with WPPS has been expanded to providing on-going implementation and executive coaching/consultation support for the past two years.

The project included:

School Board & Superintendent leadership staff work-sessions.
Integrated teambuilding and operationalizing the components of the current and future plan.
Analysis and “unpacking” of the current plan adopted in June 2022.
Identified current and potential challenges facing the school division.
Developed broad goals, measurable objectives, performance indicators, and actionable strategies to guide the implementation process.
Drafted revisions to be included in the new plan.

The Comprehensive Strategic Plan was adopted in October 2023. Berkley Group has continued to partner with West Point Public Schools, providing on-going strategic plan implementation support, executive consultation and coaching, and school board retreats. We also recently launched a leadership academy intended to help build the school division’s leadership capacity.
