Dr. Sue Burgess served as a superintendent of schools for 24 years, including stints at King William County, Spotsylvania County, and Dare County (NC). Before becoming a superintendent, she gained experience as a teacher and administrator in Davidson County (NC) and as a principal and director in Hanover County Schools.
Sue holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Ohio University, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Virginia Tech, and a doctorate in educational administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She has served as an adjunct faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Virginia.
She has been honored by the Virginia Music Educators Association and the Northeast Region of North Carolina as Superintendent of the Year. She serves as the North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Designee to the Board of Directors which operates The Lost Colony.
Sue has been a presenter at state and national conferences, including the American Association of School Administrators and the National School Boards Association. She is a past chairman of the standards committee of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and a former state president of Virginia Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority for women educators.
Sue is a current member of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents, the North Carolina Association of School Administrators, and the American Association of School Administrators. She resides in Nags Head, North Carolina, and Walkerton, Virginia.
