Dr. Brian Ratliff has 33 years of experience as an educator in K-12 Virginia public schools with 29 years as a school administrator. More specifically, he has served as superintendent of schools for the past 15 years in Amherst County (2008-2013) and Washington County (2013-2023). Brian has served in several school communities (Lynchburg City, Amherst, and Washington) in various capacities to include high school counselor, athletic director, basketball and tennis coach, assistant principal, principal, personnel director and assistant superintendent. In addition to K-12 experience, he has worked at the University of Virginia and the University of Lynchburg (formerly Lynchburg College) as an adjunct professor in leadership and policy studies while also serving as a dissertation committee for multiple doctoral-level students. Brian has served as a consultant to schools in other states including Virginia, Florida and Michigan.
Dr. Ratliff has co-authored for Advances in Educational Administration, Leading Small and Mid-Sized Urban School Districts. Chapter entitled “Teaching Students in Poverty in Small and Mid-Sized School Districts”; Presenter and Consultant for Wellness International (Docspeaks.com - Dr. Adolph Brown) – The Head and Heart Turnaround Team. Topic: “Making a Difference in School Communities: One Relationship at a Time.”; and The Southwest Virginia Leadership Conference Keynote Speaker: “Lead with “Why” and Help Others do the Same”. He has also presented on various other educational topics such as interdisciplinary teaming, dropout prevention, and student learning gaps.
Brian has also served as a member of the boards to include, but not limited to: Virginia Highlands Community College, Johnson Memorial Hospital Advisory Board, Washington County, Virginia Chamber of Commerce Executive Board/Education Committee, Chair; Tele-TAPP (Teachers and Parents as Partners) Advisory Board – Partners: University of Nebraska and East Tennessee State University; VACorp Supervisory Board, UVA K-12 Advisory Council and the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (President - 2017-2018).
Brian received his Ed.D. from the University of Virginia, M.Ed from Lynchburg College and a B.S. in Youth/Counseling from Liberty University. He has been the recipient of several awards and distinctions throughout his career including Region VII Superintendent of the Year, 2019, The Amherst County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Harry L. Day Award –Amherst County Business Community, Heritage High School, Lynchburg, Virginia - Athletic Hall of Fame Inductee, The University Council for Educational Administration Excellence in Educational Leadership Award 2009 (Curry School of Education – UVA adjunct professor award), J. Edward Petty Alumni Award – Lynchburg College, The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, 2010, David L. Clark National Graduate Student Research Award/Seminar in Educational Administration & Policy – University Council for Educational Administration and the Brotherhood Award – Heritage High School, Lynchburg, Virginia.
